Valves Christmas Mistake
Author: S.A.

I’d like to tell you of a time where there weren’t errors on systems, and as gamers we could always rely on the software provided to us by the companies we sink our money into. However, we all know that is a fairy tale dream and that mistakes in the gaming world happen every day. In fact, it seems to happen every year to all our favourite gaming companies. Often in the form of huge technological errors that seem to make us question our faith in these billion dollar industries seemingly “secure” networks or software.

This year it was Valve’s turn to drop the ball.

While not nearly comparable to Sony’s PSN crash during 2011, wherein which up to 77 million accounts had the potential to be exposed due to an external threat to their system, Valve still took a hit in credibility today I’m certain.

In what can only be called an extreme security lapse, players suddenly found themselves capable of accessing information that wasn’t their own during their holiday gaming. It’s been reported that players were able to, after logging on to their accounts, view other Valve members information. While not everyone was capable of seeing the data of others, those who could reported quite a worriesome amount of information available to be previewed. This ranged from email addresses, credit card information and even previous purchases. That said, many people might have taken advantage of this glitch due to the horrific timing of the mishap, which was during Steam’s yearly winter sale. The sale that often causes thousands of gamers to come in and purchase things at a much lower rate, and maybe this winter due to Steams mishap for free.

While Steam has since addressed the issue, and released a statement to GameSpot claiming that “Steam is back up and running without any known issues,” it is still a worrisome mistake for gamers. So for those of you out there who frequent Steam as their system of choice, make sure to take a glance at your credit card statements this winter to ensure no funny purchases were made under your name. After all, it never hurts to be safe, as oppose to sorry.
