The Walking Dead: Ep. 705 Go Getters

Maggie’s whereabouts are revealed and the third vertex that completes the triangle of communities for this season comes back into focus in Go Getters. The episode is an interesting look at how individuals react when faced with insurmountable odds. It offers a window into the inner workings of several characters, some that are ready to lead at any cost and others who shun the responsibility. Go Getters also allows some of the characters and viewers to properly mourn the passing of Abe and Glenn.

Maggie is suffering physically and mentally after losing Glenn and from her condition it appears that the Hilltop may become her home base for the duration of her pregnancy. At the gravesite on the Hilltop, despair gives way to hope as Maggie and Sasha pay their respects to the departed men in their lives. While the tone of previous episodes have been rather bleak, Go Getters has a strangely optimistic tone to it. Perhaps it’s due to ninja Jesus’ presence in the episode or Maggie’s inner strength. It’s a strength that allows her to move forward in a way that is unlike Rick’s or Morgan’s or even Carol’s. Maggie’s fortitude comes from the hope that’s growing inside of her and a chance to carry on Glenn’s legacy.

As serene as the Hilltop may be there is evidence that things are coming apart at the seams. Gregory appears quite shaken, not only by the promises that Maggie couldn’t deliver but also by the realization that the Saviors may be more than they can handle. There are hints that his health may be an issue and his alliance with Jesus seems strained. Negan’s grip casts a wide shadow and has everyone gasping for air.

The tension extends all the way to Alexandria as Rick gathers a group to get some supplies from the Hilltop. Carl and Michonne debate Rick’s course of action and one interesting fact comes to light. Uncertainty is the group’s greatest enemy. It has thrown off everyone’s ability to think clearly and act as a unified force. Negan’s brutality has obliterated everyone’s perception of the world and where direct action was once the modus operandi it has been replaced by doubt, introspection and hand ringing.

Well, not for everyone.

Go Getters was a refreshing reminder that Enid’s mantra of JSS has been taken on by some of the other characters in their own way. There’s a subtle shift in the power dynamic on The Walking Dead. It has been growing, slowly for some time, but the shift gained some traction in Go Getters and Negan’s path to total domination may have a few bumps in the road.
