As of yesterday, all but 25 employees had been dismissed through TellTales doors. The companies CEO, Pete Hawley, had this to say about the surprising shut down: “It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.”

So it seems that while the company did have loyal fans, those fans just didn’t translate into enough sales to keep open their doors. It makes sense when you begin to think on how many games the company has begun to produce in recent years, with them pumping out title after title in an attempt to capture our interests. That said, as a fan of a few of their games – A Wolf Among Us, and Walking Dead amongst that number – I can honestly say I’ve ignored more than a few of their titles due to disinterest in the character design our development. With more than a few like me out in the gaming world, and hundreds on their pay roll, money must have been rolling out – but not rolling in.
With only enough people left in the company to “fulfill the company’s obligations to its board and partners”, it seems that we can wave goodbye to Telltale. My hearts go out not for the company though, but rather the many people who find themselves out of a job at the moment. If accounts across social media are anything to go by, and according to Verge, none of them were given severance – leaving them high and dry in a pretty saturated market place.
