Shazam!: Lighting Strikes with DC’s Newest Trailer

One of the things that I can remember from my childhood was getting up early Saturday mornings to see the cartoons and TV shows. They had live action shows based on some of the most iconic superheroes at the time. There were Batman, The Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman and believe it or not Shazam. This show focused on of course Billy Batson and how he would get into and out of various situations every Saturday morning. The show was popular and it ran for three seasons and then faded into obscurity.

Now at this year’s San Diego Comic Con there was buzz that DC was going to debut at least two new trailers. One of them was Aquaman and the other was Shazam and at first I was really skeptical with DC’s already lackluster track record.

All of that disappeared after I started watching the trailer.

The trailer focuses on the main character, an orphan by the name of Billy Batson. This kid has been in and out of the foster care system for years and the only thing he wants is to live on his own. However, he is put into yet another foster home and that’s when he meets another orphan by the name of Freddy Freeman who tells him how things work around there. At school the next day, Freddy is beaten by some bully until Billy picks up his friend’s crutch and beats the bully senseless with it. They chase him onto a train but fail to catch him and he hears a voice saying that he has been chosen. He then meets the wizard that passes down his powers into Billy Batson by uttering the phrase Shazam!

The rest of the trailer shows how Billy is coping with his new body and becoming a superhero and figuring out which powers he has with the help of Freddy. This leads up to my favorite part of the trailer where Shazam is trying to foil an attempted robbery and is shot. As the bullet bounces off he declares himself bullet proof. He looks at the robbers saying, “You’re dead,” and then proceeds to throw them out a window.

This movie looks fantastic and if DC can keep on track with movies like this it will be simply amazing. But what did you think? Did you like this trailer and will you see the film?
