tarzan-on-the-planet-of-the-apes-1-00When I was growing up back east one of the things I loved to do as a kid was watch movies on TV. The lazy Saturday afternoons were packed with a menagerie of films and two were shown almost every other week. We would either watch one of the Planet of the Apes series or one of the multitude of Tarzan films. I often wondered what would happen if these two universes collided? Would Tarzan be strong enough to stand up against the Planet of the Apes? Wonder no more as Dark Horse has given us an answer with Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes! But is this a comic you will want to read or should you just revisit some of the older movies?

The comic starts out in 2016 but it seems to be different from the world we now know. The apes have been tracking down a group of humans who have been stealing from them. As they are about to be executed Tarzan swoops in and saves the day. At this point the book flashes back to 1901 in West Africa as Tarzan is playing with his “brother” who is one of the apes. It seems that the world is a completely different place as there are dinosaurs in the lost continent and hunters looking for the most dangerous game. How does this tie together with what is going on in the future? You will have to read the rest of the book to find out as the events that unfold will bring the two universes together on a collision course.

This series is penned by both Tim Seeley (of Hack and Slash fame) and David Walker (who has written for Marvel, DC and Dark Horse on a number of projects). Their combined efforts of storytelling drags you into the story and gets you engrossed in the universe that they have created. The art for the book is done by none other than Fernando Dagnino who has not only worked on a few books for DC but has done design work for Disney as well! His art shines in this book as you can see the lush jungle landscapes he draws.

If you are a fan of Tarzan or Planet of the Apes or you are just looking for a great fusion of the two you need to check out this book. For more information about this and other books head over to www.darkhorse.com and get ready to go into the deepest heart of Africa.
