Preacher 309 – Schwanzkopf

Happy entrails to you…

Tom/Brady continues to work miracles and not only fans of the NFL’s New England Patriots. The crazy concoction the Grail scientists brewed up last episode has prepped the Messiah, or at least one of his clones, to be able to wield Genesis. That is until Jesse takes things into his own hands and dukes it out with the Allfather himself. In one of the grossest and bloodiest battles in recent memory (or distant for that matter) Jesse ends the massive leader of the Grail’s reign with a healthy dose of Genesis.

The bloody beginnings don’t really let up once the opening credits come to an end. Starr and Jesse duke it out amid the Allfather’s bloody entrails and the contents of his puke bucket. The Grail needs a Messiah and the Allfather’s demise opens the door for Starr to take over and bring about his own version of Armageddon. What he won’t get however, is Jesse as his messiah. To further screw with Starr’s plans Jesse releases all of the Humperdoo clones into the world to avert any possibility of the apocalypse coming true.

Meanwhile Tulip ends up on her way to Hell thanks to Arseface’s big mouth. She almost found herself on the positive side of the ledger when a mix up between she and Featherstone had the hapless Grail agent on her way to Satan’s realm. After Eugene’s ill-timed outburst, Featherstone is released and poor Tulip continues her run of Charlie Brown luck. Stuck on a bus she joins Eugene, Hitler and the Cowboy and despite her best efforts to get off the highway to Hell she just can’t catch a break. Her attempts to derail the bus and escape are quite ingenious but always fail spectacularly.

Not to be outdone, Cassidy comes to blows with Eccarius when he disagrees with the latter’s modus operandai. He then finds himself in a spot of trouble when he tries to organize a coup against Eccarius and winds up crucified to a pool table. Cassidy’s moral compass is pointed in the right direction but he’s under water when it comes to convincing Les Enfants that their dear leader is shepherding them to slaughter instead of salvation. Even dear old Mrs. Rosen isn’t to be taken lightly and doesn’t sympathize with Cassidy at all.

Schwanzkopf is a mixed bag of entrails, laughs and slow moving narratives where Tulip and Cassidy are concerned. The strength of the scenes with Jesse loose steam when things switch over to Tulip mainly because there doesn’t seem to be any purpose to what is going on with her storyline. Cassidy’s narrative doesn’t fare much better but only because of the scarcity of screen time he’s getting. It’s time to get the gang back together. That’s when Preacher is at it’s best.
