Preacher 308 – The Tom/Brady

The Tom/Brady, strange title aside, brings AMC’s Preacher back to the levels of zaniness that were regularly seen in previous seasons. The narrative splits into four directions each laced with enough of the bizarre to keep things moving along without any serious lags. The first storyline features Jesse’s search for his missing soul and with Starr’s help he finds himself face to face with the Allfather. A crazy shootout in a crowded elevator ensues and ends with a ventilated, but still living Allfather flat on his back. Apparently overeating to epic proportions has its benefits.

Now that Gran’ma L’Angelle is aware of her grandson’s special gift she calls on an old acquaintance to help her sort things out. The devil himself shows up at her door and rings the doorbell before being let in. The pair has a brief conversation regarding Gran’ma’s obligations before she offers Genesis as a way of renegotiating their existing deal. Hoover continues his surveillance of Cassidy and Les Enfants du Sang. Going undercover as a Rastafarian taxi driver gets him close to his targets but before he can execute his plan he finds himself at their mercy. Meanwhile in Osaka, Tulip, Featherstone and Jody use a #metoo awareness seminar as a ruse to get them into a position to steal the souls they’re after.

The Allfather’s interest in Jesse becomes clear when he hooks the preacher up to a gizmo that looks like it came out of an old James Bond flick. Transferring Genesis into the Messiah proves to be a difficult task, despite Jesse’s warnings. When the Messiah is literally unable to contain Genesis’ awesome power, the Allfather is unfazed and commands that another one be sent in so that the procedure can be attempted again. The miracles of science are also within the Grail’s grasp with a collection of Messiah clones at their disposal.

Exploding entrails, vampire rituals and a heist gone wrong make The Tom/Brady one of the stronger episodes of the season. The rivalry between Featherstone and Tulip is fun and their banter is one of the highlights of the episode. Full of blood, laughs, a couple of twists and the introduction of a new character the show’s march towards the season finale has the opportunity to redefine the paths for several characters. Let’s hope it goes better than a Hoover led operation.
