Preacher 302- Sonsabitches

Going against Jesse’s family, particularly Madame L’Angelle, isn’t a good idea. The secrets behind that truth and his grandmother’s ‘ageless’ appearance play out in a sinister flashback at the top of Sonsabitches. Apparently Jesse spent his formative years sending business his grandmother’s way. Unfortunately those who fall short of the quoted price for her services suffer life altering the consequences.

While the inner workings of the L’Angelle clan get some attention in the episode Sonsabitches does focus on the some of the other players. Tulip is on the road to recovery, minus a gap in her memory and Herr Starr is back as he travels to India to pay a visit to the Krishna Headquarters.

The truth surrounding Tulip’s death increases the already simmering tension between Cassidy and Jesse. Things only get worse when Jesse’s reluctance to go after the Grail hits a speed bump or two. Leaving home isn’t as easy as it seems particularly with Jesse’s powers on low ebb.

Preacher’s irreverence to religion continues with Starr’s assault on the Krishna headquarters. A bloody gun battle between the Grail’s henchmen and the Krishna’s protectors ensues and ends suddenly when the Swami refuses to accept the Messiah as their savior. With this development, it’s easy to see how Herr’s actions in Sonsabitches might be a running theme throughout the season.

The Grail has other missions however and two of their best operatives pop up in Angelville, much to Tulip’s delight. Hoover and Featherstone’s arrival on Gran’ma L’Angelle’s property offers Tulip a chance to exact some revenge. Jesse intervenes before Tulip can do some real damage but then turns the tables on his mates when he helps to engineer their escape. The method behind Jesse’s madness soon becomes clear when he reveals that he needs Starr to give him back his soul. That would allow him to wield Genesis again and escape his granny’s clutches.

Sonsabitches has a couple of twists – one surrounding Tulip and another concerning Jesse’s past. The twists complicate matters for Jesse and his crew moving forward and offer a window into just how evil Gran’ma L’Angelle really is. There is a lot going on in the episode, which is considerably tamer than normal. It’s possible the shootout in the temple might have been considered enough but aside from that scene Sonsabitches delves further into the fractured trio, Tulip’s inner demons and the burden Jesse is forced to bear due to his family ties.
