Into the Badlands 304 – Blind Cannibal Assassins
You gotta love family.
After watching the latest episode of Into the Badlands, Blind Cannibal Assassins one has to wonder if being an only child is the way to go. The dysfunction in the Chau family pits Baron Chau against her until now unseen brother, Gaius. Held captive for the last 18 months by his loving sister, Gaius is set free and given a mission he can’t refuse – killing Pilgrim.
The tangled web of intrigue, guilt, revenge and murder gets even more convoluted with Gaius’ introduction. Nathaniel Moon only has eyes for Sunny but he’s got some competition now that M.K.’s gift has returned. Sunny’s former colt has been shown the truth regarding his mother’s death and not even a wound to the mid-section can slow him down from exacting revenge.
Speaking of Sunny, he’s got some problems of his own. Henry’s gone missing and the chief suspect is a blind man that he and Bajie rolled up on in an effort to find the witch who potentially holds the cure to Henry’s illness. Sunny and Bajie track the blind man to an underground compound that used to belong to Quinn. Only now it’s filled with a motely collection of blind cannibal assassins and their only aim is to ventilate and eat Sunny and Bajie as fast as they can. With Henry in their possession however, the group offers to spare Sunny and Bajie’s lives as long as the pair join them and sacrifice their eyesight. Complicating matters is the fact that Sunny has a dark connection to the group’s origins and has some of their blood on his hands.
Pilgrim’s door-to-door recruiting drive to gain more followers draws the Widow’s attention. Accompanied by Lydia, the Widow meets Pilgrim and Cressida to address the situation but soon finds herself caught in the crosshairs of Gaius’ mission. While not a reference to the bonds of family the old saying, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” does apply to much of the goings on in Blind Cannibal Assassins. A potential new alliance is formed after an epic battle between Pilgrim, the Widow and Gaius Chau’s assassins. Meanwhile, Moon ends up tracking down Sunny but not in the manner he expected.
Blind Cannibal Assassins’ back half is filled with not one but two excellent fight sequences loaded with entertaining swordplay and interesting finishing moves. The political games and quests for vengeance are trumped by overwhelming feelings of guilt and powerful codes of honor. This balance is bound to seesaw a few times as the season progresses but so far Into the Badlands is hitting the right notes.
