When I was growing up in Staten Island one of the places I went to school was a private high school. During my time there I always wondered what it was like to be in a private institution and did they have the same problems as in public school? Now that I look back on that life I realize that these kids have it tougher than regular public school kids. But what if you were a special kid in Gotham? This is the premise behind Gotham Academy Second Semester the next chapter of this iconic DC title.

The story starts out with two of our main characters Olive Silverlock and Professor Macpherson having soup in the deserted Gotham Academy. Everyone has gone home for break except her and while Olive thinks she is alone she gets an unexpected surprise. A roommate by the name of Amy shows up in her room and asks for a tour of Gotham Academy. Olive asks why Amy was transferred to Gotham and she blames her uncle, as it was unsafe in Duluth, which is where she was from. There they find Wedgewood Museum and decide to break into it to find out some of its secrets. But will they find more than they bargained for?

None other than Adam Archer does the art for Gotham Academy Second Semester. He has worked for a few other titles on DC including Scribblenauts and the Gotham Academy yearbook. His art gives a great style to the book and pairs up seamlessly with writers Brenden Fletcher and Becky Cloonan. Becky has worked on various books as a writer and artist including American Virgin and the True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Brenden has written for Gotham Academy before but has also written for Batgirl, Black Canary and The Joker: Endgame. This creative team sets the pace for this book as it starts out slow but gives the reader enough of a taste to keep them reading and wanting the next issue.

If you have read the first series or haven’t even heard of Gotham Academy you should check this book out. Great characters and slick, stylized art make this book an entertaining read and I cannot wait to see what happens next. So get to your local comic book shop, check out this book and remember don’t be late for class!
