Fear the Walking Dead 401 – What’s Your Story?
Fear the Walking Dead gets a bit of a makeover as it heads into Season 4 and from the opening moments of What’s Your Story? it’s evident that things are going to quite different moving forward. Right from the jump we are introduced to John, a loner and a deep thinker who can more than handle himself with a gun. It soon becomes clear that John’s on a quest and is looking for a woman, named Laura who has a gun that’s identical to the one he owns.
In the aftermath of All Out War on The Walking Dead, Morgan has exiled himself in the now abandoned Heaps. His isolation doesn’t go uninterrupted for long however as a few friends come looking for him to rejoin the group. It’s all in vain though as Jesus has little effect to get him to return to those who care for him. Not even visits from Carol and Rick can change Morgan’s mind and he sets off on his own path of discovery.
Morgan’s journey sends him south to the Lone Star State where he eventually crosses path with John and later on encounters a one-woman army named Althea. She is able to get Morgan and John out of a tight spot and now they are reluctantly in her debt. There’s more to Althea than meets the eye though. Seems she’s a journalist and begins to document her “captives” on camera. Morgan’s patience for being around company wears thin really quickly but his bid to be on his own gets derailed when the trio is attacked once again.
An old fashioned shootout ensues with Morgan displaying some of the skills that got him through the war with the Saviors. His new “friends” prove their mettle in battle and they hit the road once more. A moment of group therapy sheds some light on Morgan’s recent past and his current state of mind but old habits die hard and he finds himself on his own once again. Before long he finds that going solo isn’t as easy as it may seem.
The focus on Morgan causes first third of What’s Your Story to feel like an episode of The Walking Dead as opposed to the season premiere of Fear. A crossover of this sort, especially one that is designed to reboot a show, takes a fair amount of set up so for those who’re expecting to see the Clarks patience is your friend.
What’s Your Story? ends with some familiar faces, a series of questions surrounding what they’ve been up to since we saw them last as well as how they’re going to interact with their new acquaintances. It’s curious to have a season premiere where the principal cast pull a Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens and are basically guest stars. I suppose its necessary when introducing so many new characters. Will the set up be worth the payoff? That will have to wait for another day.
