Comic Book Men Episode 506 “Stan Saves!”
“Stan Saves!”, Comic Book Men’s return to the airwaves was a treat for fans of Stan Lee. The living legend was featured prominently during the episode and his presence added a unique spin to the memorabilia that customers purchased or brought into The Stash. “Stan Saves!” also coincided with the end of Valentines Day and in honor of the occasion the episode opened with Ming asking the guys the ways they’d break up with Wonder Woman if they were dating her.
Stan Lee dropped by The Stash for the day and shared stories with Walt, Bryan and Mike and several of the customers. Sitting behind the counter, Stan even lent a hand when he helped a customer out with a purchase of Fantastic Four #40. Hilarity ensured when the customer tried to haggle the price of the classic issue. Stan then offered some interesting insights on his perception of Dr. Doom.
With Stan in the shop all day the boys got to ask him all sorts of questions including which two characters in pop culture he would have liked to have written, the story behind his famous Playgirl pic during the 70’s, his thoughts on the death of Gwen Stacey and the time he almost quit comics.
A bit of sadness hit the shop as a long time customer stopped by to tell the gang that he’s lost his passion for comics and was ending his collecting days. The customer’s decision was put to the ultimate test when Stan decided to try and change his mind.
Another customer popped into the store looking to unload a Golden Records LP edition of Avengers #4 from 1966. The issue that accompanied the record was a reprint of Captain America’s first appearance in the Marvel Universe. During the transaction Stan recalled the impetus behind bringing back the Star Spangled Avenger to comics.
Stan Lee’s appearance on this week’s edition of Comic Book Men highlighted not only how much of an impact he’s had on modern mythology and pop culture but is also a reminder of how lucky we are to still have one of the fathers of modern superheroes in our presence. Excelsior indeed!
