Preacher Ep. 101 – See

Are we destined to be who we are or is it possible to change? That’s one of the many questions posed in See, the follow up episode to the Preacher pilot. This episode also tackles some uncomfortable topics and features a bloody showdown in a church that’s definitely not for the squeamish.

Jesse is beginning to become aware of the power he wields and although uneasy at first decides to try to put it to good use. Taking his new role as town preacher seriously, Jessie also strives to leave his past behind him and to provide council for the wayward souls of his congregation.

See begins to develop the chemistry and dynamics between the main players on the show. Tulip shows up to be baptised but ends up trying to pull Jesse back into the ways of his previous life. Her mischievous attempts to temp him hint at something left unresolved from previous moments in their relationship. Cassidy provides comic relief and the burgeoning friendship between he and Jesse sets up an interesting triangle when Tulip enters the scene.

Donnie (Derek Wilson) continues his jerkish ways and seems like more of an antagonist at this point than the chillingly disaffected Odin Quincannon played by Jackie Erle Hailey. While Donnie’s dark side is on full display, Quincannon’s pulse is almost non-existant, but to dismiss his potential for evil would be an error. Hailey’s performance is restrained and unnerving in an understated way.

A heart to heart and a night of boozing between Preacher and Cassidy sets the stage for one of the bloodiest church battles in recent memory. The exceedingly violent scene is not only cringe worthy but also hilarious and reminiscent of classic Warner Bros. cartoons.

See is a great follow up to the Preacher pilot with enough gore, black humor and character development to get the series off to a good start. It’s early, but the series has the potential to be another hit for AMC.
