The Super Bowl with its massive viewing audience has long been used to promote products, upcoming films and TV shows via new trailers and commercials. With the game in the rearview mirror the next big thing on the pop culture calendar are the upcoming blockbusters rolling into cinemas for 2018. First up is Marvel’s Black Panther and while there have been several teasers and trailers leading up to the film’s February 16 release fans were treated to a snappy Lexus spot featuring the King of Wakanda. T’Challa was not alone in the spotlight however as trailers for several highly anticipated films debuted or appeared during the game.
Lexus Black Panther Commercial
Every King needs a nice whip and T’Challa is no different. Lexus is the King of Wakanda’s chariot of choice and the commercial splices together some clips from the film with nice shots of the LS 500 Sport. No word on if any vibranium was used in the production of these models.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Tom Cruise…er…Ethan Hunt is back in a new Mission: Impossible flick and if the trailer is any indication it promises to be one of the most pulse pounding in the series. The 2:32 running time is frankly more entertaining than most films. You’ve got Criuse performing his own stunts, this time at the controls of a helicopter, and Henry Cavill sporting an epic moustache as the big bad. What more do you need?
The Cloverfield Paradox
Netflix and Paramount Pictures continue the Cloverfield legacy with the third entry in the series. Boasting an impressive cast, (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl, Chris O’Dowd, Zhang Ziyi), the trailer features the members of the Cloverfield space station where their quest to discover a new source of energy leads to some unfortunate events and reveals some of the mysteries surrounding the original film.
Avengers: Infinity War
Outside of Black Panther this may be one of the most anticipated films of the year. The Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl TV spot offers some cool visuals and new scenes for fans to geek out over without revealing too much. It’s not long but it is packed with some pretty cool snippets of action that will only increase the level of hype for the film.
Skyscraper
Dwayne Johnson is a throwback to 1980’s action heroes so it’s only logical that he’d eventually try his hand at a Die Hard inspired film. Skyscraper takes some of the action movie tropes and puts a 2018 spin on them for good measure. Making Johnson a military vet with a prosthetic leg only adds to the drama, particularly when he’s performing daring feats of heroism.
Red Sparrow
Jennifer Lawrence stars in a trailer that at first glance looks like it could be a Black Widow origin story. Alas it’s not, but it does delve deeply into Russian espionage and female agents called sparrows. The spy caper is based on the award winning 2013 novel of the same name by former CIA operative Jason Matthews.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
The official teaser finally debuted and after all of the bad press surrounding the troubled production the real hero of the piece may in fact turn out to be director Ron Howard. While many fans “may have had a bad feeling about this” movie the teaser trailer offers enough fan service and Star Wars nostalgia to perhaps calm the nerves of even those who might still be stinging after The Last Jedi.
Westworld: Season 2
The second season of HBO’s phenomenal series gets its own trailer to go along with the heavy hitters on the big screen. The trailer plays like a perfect ad for the Westworld theme park until some unsettling visuals begin to break though the sun drenched western landscapes. If the voiceover is to be taken seriously expect the Hosts to push back in a bid for self-determination.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The theme parks gone wrong theme continues with the new Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom trailer. The wheels of progress have fallen right off the truck as corporate science once again meddles with things out of their league. Instead of a monster under your bed there’s now one beside it and not even the dinosaur whisperer, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) can keep a lid on things.
Venom
Although it didn’t debut during Super Bowl Sunday, a trailer for Venom hit the interwebs today giving fans their first look at Sony’s feature film starring one of Spidey’s most celebrated villains. Starring Tom Hardy, the trailer is so light on anything Venom that it really could be a trailer for any generic horror film. Hopefully there will be more symbiote goodness in the next one.
