Over the last few years, there have been a host of live action movies based on Disney movies. From Beauty and the Beast to Disney’s Aladdin, we have seen a host of childhood favorite movies come to life on screen.
While Disney seems to generally take to sticking to the script, one movie that seems to have gone off path was Maleficent. A movie based on, you guessed it, the evil witch from Sleeping Beauty. The movie concentrated on the villain’s point of view and painted the ‘good king’ into a villain.
The movie met with good enough success that Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was given the go-ahead for production, and giving us another view from the famed dark queen’s world. This time, Aurora and Maleficent shall be teaming up to save the realm from the beginning of the movie.
The above movie will take place a few years after the original, pitting the once antagonistic foes together to protect the magical lands. The movie will release October 18th, and stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent.
The real question I have though about the movie, in fact about most Disney live action movies, is if they are really necessary? Do we need to be ruining (my choice of words not yours) classic tales and creating movies that seem to fall flat with their older fan bases but admittedly might do well with the younger ones? What are your takes on these tales? Are they worth it, or should Disney start making new tales for a new generation of children?
