When I was young I grew up with the original Lost in Space TV show. Instead of recalling episodes of wonder the only thing I can remember is the stupid robot flailing shouting “Danger Will Robinson!” Years later in the 1990’s we had were given a Lost in Space movie that didn’t fare much better as they tried to cram tons of story into two hours. Now the folks over at Netflix have released all of the episodes of the Lost in Space TV show.
And finally I feel like they have gotten it right.
Now I know this is a season recap however, I am leaving out some of the key points in the story as not to spoil it. I will cover what happens possibly in the first episode and also glance over the other characters that they meet.
The story takes place on the Resolute which is a colony ship that is transporting the 24th colonist group. Like the original show it focuses on the Robinson family which consists of the mother and father (Maureen and John) and their three kids (Will, Judy and Penny). As the story starts off there is a problem on the ship, they are forced to evacuate the Resolute and they crash land onto a nearby planet.
As the Robinsons spend time on the planet they encounter not only other colonists but other life as well. Will Robinson encounters a robot that appears heavily damaged however, he helps join both halves of its broken body. At this point the robot follows and protects Will and becomes even more useful when helping them get out of some tight spots.
Future episodes introduce us to more than a few characters but none are as sneaky or underhanded as Dr. Smith. In fact we find out that she is not really a doctor at all and is only pretending to be one as her real name is June Harris. But why is she protecting her identity from the crew? And what about Don West who is an amazing pilot and the other colonists as they try to work out how to get back in touch with the Resolute?
This version of Lost in Space is superior to the other two incarnations of the previous as this show is not played for laughs. Sure there are moments of humor sprinkled throughout the season however, it’s not a comedy. There are a few deep storylines that intertwine with one another and by the time you get to the last episode it will make you wonder where they are going to take this next.
So if you are in on a Friday night and you don’t see anything on TV do yourself a favor. Curl up on the couch, get yourself some popcorn and start watching Lost in Space because once you do you might not want to get up until it’s over.
