Kids Making Video Games
Author. S.A.
I remember being a kid who played video games and thinking to myself “I’d like to do this, this is awesome”. Than I proceeded to grow up, go to school, and lose that initial awe and hope that I could ever make something this spectacular.
Some kids don’t lose that zeal….and just start right away.
In what can only be called an attempt to make the rest of us gamers look absolutely shameful at our own internal drive, a group of Otwell Middle School students in Cumming, United States, have started to create their own video game company.
I feel like such a lazy 11 year old.
The companies name is Paraboy, and is slotted to release their first game on April 18th for Apple devices.
The concept for the game is definitely simple, most likely due to the childrens’ age and skill level, but the fire that burns in these children at such a young age is beyond surprising.
The founder of the company, Carter Herrin, described the game as a 2D plat former in which: “You’re going to be riding on a bike…It’s very simple. It’s one of those endless games. There’s a platform, its 2D.”
“You’re on the top and blocks start coming up on the top. In most games you’d jump over them, but in this one you flip to the bottom and then ones start coming on the bottom…Every five blocks it gets faster and closer together.”
Carter’s plainly stated game, but unyielding spirit in the rather large video game market, is something that we at the website find inspiring. The company itself spring boarding off an idea given to the young entrepreneurs by a TV show on YTV. The show, called ‘Game Shakers’ features a group of children who develop video games in their spare time stated Yonatan Nigussie, another founder of the company. The show inspired them to try and do this themselves, and they have yet to stop trying.
From there things started falling into place.
They found friends who knew how to code, individuals who would act as their game testers, and even people to bounce their ideas off of in the initial conceptual phase. That said, the company is far from success at this moment and likely will be a long time from any sort of real pay out. However, if the children keep up with their work ethic? Well there is no telling where they will be in a few years.
Now the real question though is, what did you do today?
