Inside

Developer: Playdead
Publisher: Playdead
Release date: June 29, 2016

The second horror title from the developers over at Playdead, Inside seems to be more than just the spiritual successor to their previous title Limbo.

It’s a game that seems out of place in today’s run of the mill game society – fuelled not by flashy moves and heavy explosions—but rather by an unflinching mood, brutal silences interrupted only by powerful noises, quick moments of shock and violence, and extremely simple environmental puzzles. It’s a game that relies heavy on its atmosphere and the players over active imagination, working in conjunction with nerves and fear.

At the very onset of you are invited back into the similar play style of Playdead’s last title, Limbo. By using distance and a variety of shading skills, Playdead invokes a rather scary setting. As you can see strangers in the distance, but don’t interact with them despite their clearly nefarious nature. In fact, your only objective seems to be to hide and run away from this individuals as fast as you can. To make matters worse, these individuals pursue you actively upon siting you – and as you have no means to defend yourself from these plethora of baddies, ranging from people, dogs and other unspeakable evils, you must take to the only thing a gamer can do in such a situation.

Run.

This makes the game a nervous version of cat and mouse for most players, wherein we can only hope that at some point we’re not the mouse anymore and we can teach these unnamed foes a lesson.

As it stands, Inside looks like a fun game to play in the dark with some friends – if only to have a good scare. I suggest you look out for it come the later part of June, and try to pick it up cheap.
