Life in the Stupidverse Graphic Novel Brings Biting Political and Social Satire to the 2020 Election Season
The September Release by Pulitzer-Nominated Cartoonist Tom Tomorrow Expands IDW Publishing’s Celebrated Library of Acclaimed Political Cartoonists
SAN DIEGO, CA (August 25, 2020) – As Election Day 2020 draws ever closer, IDW Publishing welcomes voters to reflect on today’s political climate with Life in the Stupidverse, a new publication from Pulitzer-nominated cartoonist Tom Tomorrow (Dan Perkins) which draws inspiration from current events.
Debuting on Tuesday, September 1st, Life in the Stupidverse is IDW’s second softcover collection of Tomorrow’s wildly popular, weekly comic strip This Modern World, which is featured in approximately 80 newspapers across the U.S. This new release follows the success of Crazy is the New Normal which chronicled 2016’s whirlwind Trump/Clinton contest.
The new volume invites readers to relive the trauma of the last four years with a hilarious (if nightmarish) trip down memory lane. From the Great Inaugural Crowd Size Debate to the nomination of Bret “I Like Beer” Kavanaugh, from Muslim bans to concentration camps, from the Mueller Report to the latest outrageous thing you read about just this morning… Tom Tomorrow covers it all so readers can hide in bed with a blanket over their heads, praying for an asteroid to finally hit the planet.
“Friends, it has been a really strange three years,” says Tomorrow in his introduction. “I hope (these cartoons) provide a moment of distraction, and possibly even connection — a sense that you are not alone in all of this. Because none of us are.”
The source material for Life in the Stupidverse, Tomorrow’s This Modern World, is a weekly cartoon of political and social satire featured regularly on such sites as The Nation, Daily Kos, and The Nib, and a mainstay of the alternative press for 25 years. His work has also appeared in publications including The New York Times, the New Yorker, Esquire, Spin, Mother Jones, US News and World Report, the Economist, and many others. He is a two-time recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the 2013 recipient of the Herblock Prize for editorial cartooning, and a 2015 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2017, IDW Publishing fulfilled the author’s lifelong dream with a comprehensive career retrospective, Tom Tomorrow: 25 Years of Tomorrow, collecting over 1,500 cartoons.

Life in the Stupidverse joins a pantheon of political cartooning titles published by IDW and imprint Top Shelf Productions, including the upcoming The Mueller Report: Graphic Novel (debuting 9/15) by Shannon Wheeler and Steve Duin, Enemy of the People: A Cartoonist’s Journey by Rob Rogers, and a full library reprinting Bloom County by Berkeley Breathed.
“The adage ‘truth is stranger than fiction’ seems more accurate than ever, but it’s added new challenges to the political cartoonists striving to stay ahead of the real-life parody we wake up to daily,” says Justin Eisinger, Editorial Director, Graphic Novels & Collections for IDW Publishing. “In this time of breakneck news and constant outrage, it’s a privilege to assemble a collection of critically acclaimed talent that documents our modern era.”
