I never thought I would see the day where Far Cry wouldn’t feature guns, but the gaming world is changing and so to are the games. So with Ubisoft releasing it’s next title in the game, one can only hope this new twist will only endear players to whatever new style of play that will be available to them to compensate for their lack of firepower.

Far Cry Primal forces players to a land before technological know how and weapons of mass destruction are even a glimmer in man kind’s eye. Instead we’ve traded in deathly weapons, for even more deadly predators. We are set during the beginning of the Mesolithic period of earths history, which is roughly 12, 000 years before today’s present. The player finds themselves in the land of Oros, a fictional open world with wildlife towering over any man. Our survival is a daily challenge, as not only do warring tribes come into conflict with one another regularly, but the wildlife also tries to turn you into a meal. In this lovely world, players will control our new main protagonist Takkar. He is a man that has lost his tribe in this hostile territory, and must find a way to not only survive but also thrive in this new land.

Far Cry Primal is an action adventure game that centres around melee weapons like spears, clubs, axes, and short-ranged weapons such as bows. No weapon can be purchased in this game, so don’t hold your breath in that regard. The only way to get better gear is through crafting materials that have been scavenged in the world, and as players progress, we are capable of producing more lethal weapons as our resources expand. As a point of interest, the game makes players hunt for food and even learn to create fire. Emphasizing that this is not the modern world where luxuries are plentiful. We also get the chance to lead a tribe of our own, in the attempt to lay claim to the surrounding world and it’s resources. However, let it be noted that we must protected our people and our ever expanding territory. After all, being in charge is never easy. With a new day and night system in place, this protection becomes that much harder. This ever changing system determines the aggressiveness of certain creatures, as well as their danger level. That said, keep your eyes peeled for dangers at night, with only a torch to light the way and to potentially ward of predators, the night still proves to be an ever tricky foe.

A fun little add on to the game is the ability to tame certain wildlife by giving them food. These animals then become your companion, assisting you not only in combat but for scouting purposes as well. I find this to be a potentially fun set of abilities for players, especially since last game we were forced to face “beast masters” who often would set mountain lions on us at their will. So keep your eyes peeled for this game folks, I’m sure it will be as fun as it’s predecessors.
