E3 2018 Recap: EA Underwhelms

E3 kicked off yesterday with EA showing off their new titles and to try and get gamers excited for the games that are being released in 2018-2019.

And IMHO they failed… miserably.

Why? Let’s break it down. The first part of the conference out of the gate showed Battlefield V but they only hinted at some of the features and spent a good probably 5-10 minutes on it. That’s all they did! There’s tons of features that are being added to the game and supposedly they are adding a battle royale mode.

Listen EA. Just because EVERYONE is doing something doesn’t mean you have to do it. I am sick and tired of the battle royale games! I even STOPPED playing Fortnite’s Battle Royale because it’s is just sooooo repetitive.  And I get it there’s a chance to win the game and be #1 and I did that one time. I’m done. I don’t need to do it again.

Next we went into FIFA 19, NBA Live and Madden 19 and I am not a sports guy. However, there were some people cheering about this game. That’s also something I wanted to cover here. The crowd was VERY unresponsive to some titles as they announced something to only be met with silence.

EA also announced a streaming service that was more than a bit vague as it showed people playing their games not only on a laptop or a PC or game console.. but on your phone?!? Wait a minute. I am going to be able to play Titanfall 2 on my Android phone? Something doesn’t seem right here. I think EA is biting off more than they can chew with this new streaming service and they didn’t even announce a price point! So how much is it per month? $10? $20? More? Also announced was Origin Access Premiere which gives you access to EA’s and other publishers titles and they showed off games such as The Sims, Need for Speed Payback and Anthem however, this is only on PC. And how much is this? I doubt for a $20 a month subscription you are going to get the latest PC titles. So I have no idea.

The next part of the conference was so cringeworthy there are going to be meme’s about this all over the net soon. The host of the conference is interviewing Vince of Respawn Entertainment and they are talking about a new Star Wars game. There is NO gameplay, concept art or anything shown and the interaction between the two makes me uncomfortable. After that we go into Battlefront 2 as they said they apologized for what was done and they’re fixing it. They announced a bunch of new content including stuff from the Solo movie and Episode 3 as well as a mode where you can play Imperial forces going against the Ewoks on Endor.

Two indie games were shown which were Unravel 2 and to be honest that looks good. However, I didn’t even know there was an Unravel and the game doesn’t look like something I would be interested in. Another game called Sea of Solitude looks pretty impressive for an indie game as it deals with you being alone in a world that was flooded. You are alone and you are trying to come to grips with that reality as it is slowly eating at your mind and twisting you into some kind of monster. Other than Battlefield V this is the only game I am excited to play.

Next was a new Command and Conquer game and I am sorry. I worked at Westwood Studios who CREATED the Command and Conquer franchise and then was bought out by EA as they cherry picked who they wanted and scrapped the rest. Now the only thing after YEARS of waiting for a game is a crappy phone game? Sorry. I will pass on this.

The show rounded out with them showing Anthem and what that game is about. This to me feels similar to Destiny but the only difference is that you can fly around in these suits. The difference however, is that you aren’t limited to one class as you can switch between the four classes that are in the game. So to me that’s a plus because if I don’t like the class that I started out with I can just go ahead and switch it up. Also, so far what we have been shown of the game (And I admit I have watched Angry Joe’s coverage of this game and I will give him credit here for this) is that the gameplay seems VERY linear. I thought this is going to be an open world to explore? It just looks like a giant canyon or hallway in every instance.

That’s my coverage of the EA 2018 E3 press conference. If you want to watch it you can see it here. However, prepared to be underwhelmed. For more coverage of E3 2018 stay tuned to Comix Asylum for coverage of ALL of the conferences!
