Dishonored 2: Combine Powers for Fearsome Affects
Dishonored, a work released in 2012 by Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks, was a game that gave you a variety of powers that could be linked together in an assortment of ways. The sequel to the game, Dishonored 2, will be released November 11, 2016 and promises to provide the same assortment of super natural abilities.
It also promises to allow you to combine said powers and unleash hell on unsuspecting A.I. enemies.
Director of the game, Harvey Smith, gave an example on how these powers have been combined by game testers. Some of these combinations were beyond what the game designers themselves expected. One such example was when the new protagonist, Emily Kaldwin, used her power Domino in conjunction with her Doppleganger ability. The Domino ability lets you link enemies together to eliminate them all by killing just one in the chain, while Doppleganger produces a copy of yourself that can be used as bait or a distraction. The intuitive player connected the Domino ability and the Doppleganger together, killing their duplicate and proceeding to kill all their enemies at once.
Smith was astonished by the move, having this to say: “She just assassinates it. And all three of the other guys drop…We had no idea this was possible, we never planned this. It’s just one of those systemic game mechanic interactions that clever, creative players figure out as they start to experiment.”
This kind of quick thinking is what makes gaming so fun, thinking beyond what the developers had planned and creating a protagonist that can handle all foes. Another example of this quick thinking can be seen when another game tester connected the Razormines ability, a proximity mine of sorts, with their Doppleganger ability. The game, for some reason or another, doesn’t recognize the Doppleganger as an actual person. That said, the player placed their Razormine ability on top of their Doppleganger and allowed the enemies to chase it, wherein they proceeded to die in an explosion when they caught up with their foe.
Now that’s some out of the box thinking.
Whether or not these kind of tricks will be allowed into the actual game now that they have been discovered remain to be seen. What is known however is that the developers over at Arkane studios tend to embrace any skills that gamers come up with, Smith himself is cited saying that “if it’s occurred to the player and if it’s fun, [they] tend to embrace it.”
Now let’s see what kind of moves you can come up with in the upcoming title. Check out the game trailer below to remind yourself of what’s to come.
