Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Season 2 Preview
Everything’s connected…
Dirk Gently is back for a second season of mysteriously interconnected adventure beginning January 5 on Netflix. After the time travelling escapades of Season 1 Douglas Adams’ (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) paranormal private eye is faced with an inter-dimensional threat from the magical realm of Wendimoor. Complicating matters is the fact that Dirk (Samuel Barnett) is now in Blackwing’s clutches and his newly minted holistic detective agency is in tatters before it has even begun. While Todd (Elijah Wood) and Farah (Jade Eshete) continue to look for Dirk, they are on the run from the authorities. Todd’s lies have become reality as the pararibulitis that afflicts his sister, Amanda (Hannah Marks) appears to have taken hold of him as well.
Season 2 delves into the characters relationships a little more padding their individual backstories to add another layer of complexity to the narrative. There are a few new characters along for the ride. A mysterious book somehow grants a mom (Amanda Walsh) special abilities, Mr. Priest (Alan Tudyk) adds to the body count as a menacing bounty hunter, Sherlock Hobbs (Tyler Labine) and Tina Teventino (Izzie Steele) are two cops who overcome their penchant for comic relief to make some salient connections to help Dirk solve the case and John Hannah joins the cast as The Mage.
Picking things up a few months after the events of last season Dirk and the gang find themselves faced with challenges unlike anything they’ve encountered before. According to Netflix: “Everything and everyone continues to be connected… from the sterile chambers of Blackwing, to the sleepy town of Bergsberg and the magical land of Wendimoor. After a few misfires, Dirk Gently steadily finds his footing on the new case to “find The Boy”, and with the help of his friends, makes the necessary connections to solve the mystery before it’s too late.”
After viewing the first four episodes of Season 2, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is like a tasty, slow cooked meal that feels like it has been prepared in a microwave. It takes a while for all of the elements of the quirky, fast paced narrative strands to come together, but once it does the results are satisfying. Much like last season, part of the show’s charm is watching how seemingly random events are actually connected. If the entertaining start to Dirk’s sophomore effort continues throughout the remaining episodes then the journey to Wendimoor will be well worth it.
