If you’re leaning toward going as Captain America for your next Comic Con, you might be wondering where to start. Cosplaying as Captain America is no easy feat, but don’t worry—even the actual Avengers had to start somewhere. We’ve got some tips and tricks for a Captain America cosplay that will help you make a budget-friendly yet impressive costume.

Use Foam for the Shield

Steve Rogers might use Vibranium, but we mere mortals wandering the stalls of Comic Con don’t want something that heavy. Using foam to craft your Captain America shield is not only budget-friendly, but it’s also lightweight and easy to maneuver.

Just cut out two large circles from EVA foam, glue them together, and give them a few coats of metallic paint. Attach some sturdy straps, and you’ll be ready to deflect any playful punches.

Glue Tip

Don’t use hot glue for the shield, as it doesn’t take kindly to foam. Instead, use super glue—and a lot of it!

Mix and Match From Different Costume Eras

Getting the captain’s look exactly right for one specific movie can put you through unnecessary stress. Captain America’s look has evolved through the decades, and so can yours.

As long as your costume resembles the superhero from a distance and doesn’t look incorrect up close, you’re welcome to mix and match from different eras! For example, if you find a winged helmet at the thrift store but choose to sew a suit more similar to the most recent movies, that’s perfectly fine. People might notice, but no one will care.

Thrift as Much as You Can

On the topic of a thrifted helmet, make a point to hit second-hand stores for other costume elements as well. Super soldier serum isn’t free, and neither are top-tier cosplay costumes.

You’d be surprised how often you can find hidden gems that just need a little bit of DIY magic to transform into a key piece of your Captain America cosplay attire. Plus, you’ll be doing the environment a favor in the process!

Don’t Forget the Details

It’s the little things that turn a good cosplay into a great one. First, make sure all major elements of the outfit are represented, from the chin strap to the raised star on his chest. Moreover, Captain America proved that metal belt buckles aren’t dead, and so should you by getting one for his signature utility belt.

Another great detail to include is making the suit look battled-weathered. If you’re emotionally able and willing, scuff up the shield and soil the fabric a bit. Though completely optional, the battle-worn look is a unique take on the cosplay and provides excellent detail.

With these tips and tricks for a Captain America cosplay, you’ll be ready to serve looks and justice at your next Comic Con. We hope you feel more ready and excited to start making your superhero dreams come true!
