Batman: Arkham Knight
Platform: PS4, Xbox ONE, PC
Developer: RockSteady Studios
Author: Z.M
This is how it happened. This is how you became ‘The Batman’. Get your cape and cowl ready for the final installment to Rocksteady’s telling of the Dark Knights troubled dealings with his rogue gallery. For those of us who may not have picked up your utility belt and batarang’s in while, its pretty easy to get back into the flow of things. The game features Gotham city as our playground, and we get to fight our way through her troubled streets. That said, with a city falling into chaos, you’ll be offered a plethora of challenges to keep you busy as the worlds greatest detective.
Batman has never looked so good.
It is Halloween and never has a trick of this magnitude been played on the city of Gotham with no treats to be found; unless you count Riddler Trophies, which really would be those gross candy corns everyone hated finding in your bag of loot. Scarecrow is planning to release his most dangerous and potent batch of fear toxin yet and it’s Batman’s job to put an end to that nightmare. Only one problem stands in your way. He’s brought an army with him lead by the mysterious Arkham Knight, whom you don’t know, but he sure seems to know you.
The Arkham Knight is no normal foe.
As Batman, it’s now your turn to take back your city. One borough at a time. As you fight your way through the streets you’ll find that there seems to be no end to the opposition ready stop you in your tracks. Luckily you won’t be on your own. With the help of Lucius Fox for your armoury of gadgets, Oracle feeding you the intel, or Robin and Nightwing helping you fight in the streets, you’ll never find yourself with your back to a wall you can’t breakthrough.
The boys are back in town.
While you work towards returning order to your city you’ll find yourself working through missions that provide a great pace and deliver a well rounded story. You’ll find yourself fighting such classic villains such as Deathstroke, Penquin, and Two-Face. You’ll also find some less familiar evil-doers like Hush and Professor Pyg. All while still being a pain in Scarecrow’s nightmarish side, you’ll come across revelations and twists galore, although predictable as they may be for some more well versed fans of the caped crusaders escapades.
Your gameplay is going to be the same as it has been in previous games in the series and as tight as they have ever been. Every move flowing nearly seamlessly into each other, and combat rolling out just as smooth as you would expect the Dark Knight to be. The only difference this time around is that you now have control over the batmobile, or as the goons you’ll chase down, run over and pelt with rubber bullets will say, “He has a freakin’ tank!”. That said, the controls for our miniature tank on wheels are a little awkward and will take time to get used to, but with practice you’ll be platforming like Mario and racing through the streets like Dominic Toretto in no time flat.
Can I own this?
At no point will your sound take you out of the immersion in this dark and wonderful world. With the subtle shift of background music and sound mixing you’ll never miss a piece of dialog from the talented voice actors that were brought in to bring the story to life.
Batman Arkham Knight was a grand time to be had. Whether playing for an extended session or short bursts due to real life needs and responsibilities, it’s easy to jump in or out of the game with natural break points. With equally well written DLC story packs like “A Matter of Family” or challenge packs like the 1989 Batmobile time trials it’ll be hard not to find more to do once you’ve saved Gotham. Even if you don’t want to shell out for single pieces or the season pass that provides six months of DLC for the single price of $29.99 the added New Game+ should keep you busy saving Gotham all over again.
