Activision’s Competitive Video Gaming Stream Sets Records

Activision Blizzard has only owned the rights to eSports for a short duration of time, and yet they seem to be making it quite successful on their own. This success can be seen as they set ground braking viewership numbers during their coverage of the “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship”.

The event covered a total of five days, and captured a total of 71 million video views, with concurrent views hitting 1.6 million at one point.

Yes, there are a lot of gamers.

Less than five years ago it may have been a flabbergasting idea that this many people would be watching other individuals playing video games as oppose to playing themselves. However that time has come and gone, and viewership numbers are rising.

Mike Sepso, the vice president of Activision Blizzard Media was quote stating the following: “Last year, more than 225 million people watched competitive gaming, and the passion, engagement and size of this audience only continues to grow.”

Not only is the viewership growing, the prize pool is hardly anything to sneeze at. This recent tournament totting a $1 million dollar prize pool. However with that increased prize pool has come increased attempts at advertisement. That advertising has caused a huge leap in audience for eSport’s, more than twice as many people viewed competitive video game tournaments last year as opposed to watching the Super Bowl 50.
I’ll take this as a win for the gaming community.

This growth can only go upwards, and mean great things for the gaming community. Well this is the hope at least.
