Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Warning: Review Contains Spoilers!

In the 80’s both of the original Ghostbusters films were released and fans always wanted more. However, as time went on we’ve only had a reboot, which dismissed the first two films entirely, and it flopped. However, Sony had thought to bring back this franchise, but is this worth watching? Here’s my review of the latest film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

After being evicted Callie, a mother of two children, Trevor and Phoebe, find out that their grandfather has died. The trio decides to pack up and relocate to a dilapidated farm in Summerville, Oklahoma. This place is in the middle of nowhere and everyone refers to their grandfather as a dirt farmer. As soon as they move in there is an earthquake and we later find out that this town does not lie on any fault lines and there hasn’t been any drilling or fracking in the area. So what could be causing these quakes?

The two kids are trying to adjust to their new life and find it hard to fit in. Trevor tries to get a job at the local burger stand and impress a girl named Lucky. Meanwhile, Phoebe has also made a new friend named Podcast, because he has one and is always documenting things with his microphone. After a bit of prompting from what can only be described as a ghost, Phoebe finds a ghost trap that was left hidden in the floor by her grandfather. Why was the grandfather hiding this trap and who was he? All I can say is if you were a fan of the first two films you need to watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife to find out what happens next.
The performances of the various actors are amazing from Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace as Trevor and Pheobe to Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd as Callie and Gary Grooberson, a local science teacher. The plot is also very well done as this was written by Gil Kenan and Ivan Reitman, who produced and directed the first two films and comes back to work on this one. There are a lot of great moments in this film and I don’t want to give those away, however, if you have seen the trailers you’ll know what I am talking about. There are a lot of throwbacks to the first two films and all I can say is do not leave your seats until the lights come up as there are after credit scenes as well.

For years Ghostbusters fans wanted a new film to take this franchise in another direction and Ghostbusters: Afterlife does this in spades. This is one of those films that needs to be experienced in a crowded theater with lots of fans to hear their reactions as the story plays out on the silver screen. Go to your local theater and check out Ghostbusters: Afterlife right away, and remember we’re ready to believe you!
