Fear the Walking Dead 508 – Is Anybody Out There?
There’s a lot of uncertainty swirling in the air at the outset of Is Anybody Out There? as the gang scrambles to get the plane flight ready, the ominous siren wailing in the distance is a harbinger of bad things to come. Dwight and John are still nowhere close to returning and Alicia’s health status is anything but certain moving forward. There’s also the matter of that hoard of walkers roaming the countryside that threaten to complicate any plans of a successful escape for Morgan and the rest of the crew.
Another fly in the ointment involves Logan and the possibility that he might be of help to everyone. Sarah tries to twist his arm to provide some light on a makeshift runway but she’s unsuccessful. Seems that he’s ready to leave his warehouse now that it’s apparently of no use to him. With that revelation, he takes off leaving her behind.
The bulk of Is Anybody Out There? deals with getting the plane ready and reuniting everyone so that they can take off before the walkers and another reactor meltdown dooms them. There are some tender moments between John and June and their love for each other is tested before Strand and Al try to get the plane into the air. Everything falls into place, a little too conveniently though, to provide a happy getaway. The runway escape, John and Dwight arriving at the last second and even Daniel showing up to help Sharon and Wendell seems unnaturally optimistic for a show like Fear.
Throw in an unexpected proposal and it’s almost too much sunshine to bear until a couple of walkers arrive on the scene, the lights go out on the runway and the plane begins to break down. Thank the Lord for tropes. Considering it’s the mid-season finale though it’s not surprising that the episode tried to wrap up some of the storylines that propelled ( sorry, I couldn’t resist) the first half of the season.
Heading into the second half of the season, with the nuclear reactor out of the way and atonement on the minds of several of the players there is another problem standing in their way. Gasoline has begun to go bad making travel quite problematic. Logan pops up again in the final moments to set the stage for the quest everyone will have to go on when Fear returns from it’s hiatus. With no real big bad established, it’s the fight for survival and personal redemption that will pull the narrative along. There are still a few dangling plot threads that need to be tied up but the biggest question will no doubt be the ticking time bomb that surrounds Alicia’s health.
