The Walking Dead 906 – Who Are You Now?
Who are you now? That’s a good question considering the changes for all of the characters on The Walking Dead. Now that we are firmly in the post Rick era courtesy of a time jump of several years the characters we once knew are familiar yet new all at once. Carol’s new locks and role as Queen of Alexandria, Michonne’s hardened edge and Eugene’s new found confidence are just a couple of the new developments the show has brought into the mix. Most glaring are the changes in Henry and Judith Grimes, who’ve matured to the point that they are calling some of the shots – even if their input isn’t always warranted.
Rick’s “death”, doesn’t appear to have been a galvanizing event and the communities seem to have drifted apart over the years. Alexandria is showing its age with the wear and tear starting to show in its infrastructure. Former adversaries have now become allies but the new terrain isn’t entirely safe. The need for security causes some concern when a new group makes their way within Alexandria’s walls particularly when Michonne questions their motives.
Who Are You Now? Raises a lot of questions and forces viewers to reexamine established characters in a new light. What happened in the time between Rick’s disappearance and the present timeline will surely be touched on at some point. Daryl’s a man with no real home, Negan’s still behind bars but with a sunnier disposition than when we last saw him and Carol’s unwillingness to be taken advantage of will surely generate some debate.
There’s also the walkers and the changes they’ve undergone. Once mindless husks roaming the countryside, they now exhibit some form of sentience and the ability to communicate with each other. If this twist continues to evolve, will we see them become more than just cannon fodder and morph into a threat all on their own?
The Walking Dead’s new direction does hold promise but it appears that it will take time to reestablish itself. With Rick moving onto his solo movie career and the time jump changing things so drastically its like the show is being rebooted on the fly. Whether audiences take to the new direction remains to be seen but as it stands right now “Where are you now?” elicits the response, “Not where I’d like to be.” Hopefully that will change in the coming weeks.
