Growing up in one of the forgotten boroughs of NYC (that would be Staten Island) there were more than a few places that we were warned not to go. Abandoned buildings, factories, hospitals, etc were scattered throughout the island and people actually went to those places usually to party. But what if you weren’t the only people there? What if there was someone or something inhabiting the facility that you were tresspassing on? This is the subject of Soft Matter a new film from Wild Eye Releasing.
Soft Matter follows two graffiti artists (Kish and Haircut) who are looking for a place to create their next art installation. As the two scout out various locations they come across a hospital that is rumored to be haunted. However, the hospital isn’t haunted it is in fact populated with two research scientists that are looking to garner more information from an extinct sea creature. The scientists are trying to revive this creature and the two are successful. Now this creature is hell bent on slaughtering everyone in the building. And not to give anything else away but all I can say is that you need to strap yourself in for a VERY wild ride. What I love about this movie is instead of using some fancy CGI this is another practical effects movie. I am glad that this story is done this way because I grew up with schlocky movies such as this (I had seen a lot of Troma’s movies and this definitely falls within that category).
There are some special features included on this DVD including a making of featurette as you can see how this movie and the creature were both made. There is also another small film that is on this dvd called Slow Creep which is about a cursed video tape and some type of entity that follows anyone that watches it. This is a great small piece and it’s amazing to watch as it is only 12 minutes and I loved every minute of it. There is also the trailer for Soft Matter which rounds out the special features.
