Preacher Ep 206 – Sokasha
A shady deal with life altering consequences kicks off Sokasha, the latest episode of Preacher. Rolling around in an armored truck, a mysterious Japanese man brokers deals and administers medicine that appear to combat the effects of dementia for handsome sums of cash. This being Preacher, the man’s good deeds are almost certainly not on the level and it’s only a matter of time before his true motives become clear.
Before that mystery can be attended to The Saint of Killers continues his bloody quest to hunt down Jesse. The Saint’s arrival interrupts some lively discussion and a gourmet pancake breakfast sending our heroic trio scattering to the alleys of New Orleans and into a public library. There they get collegiate and read up on the Saint’s history. Their study session is cut short by Denis’ untimely return to his apartment forcing Jesse to spring into action to save the Cajun’s life.
What happens next is typical Preacher. To prove to the Saint of Killers that God has disappeared, Preacher shows him the deity’s audition tape. For a scene that should be overwrought with tension comedic undertones elicit chuckles as the two adversaries hash out a deal. Jesse has an hour to make good on their agreement but must leave his cohorts behind. The preacher then takes to the streets and this is where Sokasha comes full circle. Jesse’s quest brings him face to face with the Japanese man from the prologue and it’s revealed that the armored truck is full of unassigned souls.
With Jesse out on his mission, an interesting revelation about Denis and Cassidy comes to light. It’s an interesting development that adds some layers of complexity to the vampire’s backstory. Cassidy has been laying himself on the line over the past few episodes to help save his friends and this week’s no different. His confrontation with Jesse in Dallas coupled with the sacrifice he makes while trying to protect Tulip shows that there is more to the wisecracking vampire than meets the eye.
Speaking of sacrifice, Jesse resorts to a measure of his own to keep the Saint at bay. How much is 1% worth? That’s a question that may come back to haunt Jesse, particularly after he tried to bury his problems. In truth though no matter how far one goes to conceal their troubles they’re often not that far from the surface just waiting to be exposed.
