The Walking Dead: Ep. 702 The Well

Although it has been a week since the shocking and heart breaking season 7 premiere the shockwave caused by last week’s episode continues to ripple through The Walking Dead universe. Fan reaction continues to be intense and it’s safe to say that Negan may be the most hated villain on television right now. With that in mind, The Well delivered a welcome change of pace to a show that is as emotionally charged as can be at the moment.

The Well focuses on Carol, Morgan and their new surroundings, The Kingdom. It’s a solid episode that delves into the simmering Carol/Morgan not so cold war, sheds some light on this idyllic if somewhat strange community and it’s charismatic leader, Ezekiel.

When Morgan introduces Carol to Ezekiel it’s a priceless moment. Her quizzical expression may have been shared by some of the viewers as the scene played itself out. If anything was gleaned from Ezekiel’s first few moments on screen, is that if only at first blush he appears to be the complete opposite of everything Negan represents.

Ezekiel and Negan are two sides of a very different coin. While Negan rules with fear, menace and an iron fist, Ezekiel prefers to take a different route. His late night conversation with Carol is quite revealing and suggests there is more to this mysterious leader than meets the eye.

It was great to see Carol and Morgan in The Well. There presence was a bit comforting especially considering the amount of loss suffered last week. Carol’s journey is still an uncertain one and her desire to get away from everything has not abated. She’s succumbed to the trauma around her and not caring makes it easier to cope. She’s like an untamed tiger unwilling to be bound by Morgan’s concern for her or anything else that she perceives to be in her way.

Morgan’s changed as well. He has adapted to life in the Kingdom and has even taken to passing on some of his skills to those around him. There has been a shift in him from last season and even he has come to the realization that things can change – including people.

The Well allowed viewers to catch their collective breath and mourn the losses incurred last week while keeping tabs on some of the characters that weren’t with Rick group. It also shed some light on the dynamic between communities and the expansive tentacles of Negan’s organization. On a final note they say that knowledge is power, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. I may never eat another pig after tonight’s episode. No more pulled pork for me…sigh.
