Preacher Ep. 105 – Sundowner

The first ten minutes of Sundowner may have been the finest moments of Preacher so far. Jesse gets the lowdown on what his powers actually are courtesy of Fiore and Deblanc and the revelation leads to a startling confrontation with a mysterious stranger outside of Flavour Station. The encounter, both bloody and comic, opens Jesse’s eyes to the true scope of what’s going on around him.

Fiore, Deblanc and Jesse’s all out throw down with a seraphim left a trail of blood and enough bodies to fill half a season’s worth of episodes. It was like watching a royal rumble – a bizarre wrestling match with guns, axes and an iron, yes an iron. The sight of Fiore holding an iron as his weapon of choice elicited a few chuckles amongst the mayhem. The seraphim (Juliana Potter), in Annville to apprehend Deblanc and Fiore, is a woman of few words who prefers her fists, feet and anything she can get her hands on to speak for her.

The matter of what to do with Genisis puts Jesse at odds with Fiore and Deblanc and elicits Cassidy’s concern. While others see his possession as a terrible thing, Jesse believes otherwise. In an episode full of showdowns, Emily and Tulip have a confrontation of their own. The two rivals for Jesse’s affections have a tense, but cordial exchange that is really a careful dance around each other. After Tulip’s initial outburst, its more what they don’t say to each other that makes their scenes together interesting.

The relationships between the characters on Preacher become a little more complicated this week as Tulip comes to Emily’s aid and her liaison with Cassidy threatens to upset things with Jesse. It’s evident that Tulip’s true affections are for Jesse, but after getting together with Cassidy last episode she has effectively put herself in the middle of two love triangles. The dual love triangles are curious due to the fact that all of those involved are experiencing unrequited love, save for Jesse who is basically in love with himself/Genesis at this point. How things progress from here could have a profound effect on Emily and Cassidy and the fallout could have serious consequences on the bonds of friendship that have been established so far.

How do you know you’re doing the right thing, a question posed by Miles during Sundowner is really the central motivation for several of the characters on Preacher. Tulip, Cassidy, Fiore and Deblanc all feel that their motives are correct and their actions justified. This applies to Jesse most of all, who despite the warnings and bloodshed that has occurred around him due to Genesis, looks past all of it and deems his new powers as a gift. In his own words, “God doesn’t make mistakes”. Cassidy on the other hand, doesn’t necessarily agree with Jesse on that point arguing that humans make tonnes of them.

With that in mind and after Eugene’s confrontation with Jesse, expect things on Preacher to get even more out of hand before the season comes to a close in a few weeks.
