The games that I feel should motivate gamers don’t lie in the ones that have the best game mechanics, or even the ones whose graphics make you stop and just stare. Where the heart of the gamer rests is in the story, a place where emotions are churned through simplistic narrative and heart warming actions. Few games reach this pinnacle of gamer-ship for me. The type of game that causes me to smile secretly and invoke a the want to play it again to relieve this secret thrill. One such game in recent memory was Journey, the surprising PS3 game that had gamers enjoying themselves immensely despite its’ short story and simplistic narrative. I have the same hopes for Coldwood Interatives up and coming title, Unravel.
Our Character Starts his Adventure.
This game starts with an old woman looking out her window, before she proceeds upstairs she lovingly adjusts a picture of a baby and picks up a ball of yarn. As she proceeds upstairs and off screen, a lone ball of yarn rolls out of shot. Thus we are introduced to ‘Yarny’ a creature made of red yarn and our games protagonist. This creature is looking around in amazement at the world that he has been introduced too, and seems to have an extreme willingness to travel from home. In fact it’s stated by the game developers that the yarn that makes up ‘Yarny’ represents the love that it is made up of. As ‘Yarny’ traverses the game that love unravels, and seems to slowly imply the young creatures death.
Yarny making his way out into the world…
As characters progress, and Unravel themselves, they will find multiple puzzles throughout the world that will hinder their progression. They must use ‘Yarnys’ own unravelling pieces to climb, swing, or in other creative ways to progress forward. The stuff that makes you up, the ‘love’ you are made of, is what helps you progress in this foreign and strange world.
Everything about this game screams short and simple, yet surprisingly heartfelt. I’m holding out simple hopes for this game and whether or not I’ll be able to sit at home and enjoy in this new year. I’ll let you guys know how it goes.
