It’s Christmas Eve!! No frickin’ way! I’ve hit the fourth letter of the alphabet. Despite three more letters to go, there are seven entries remaining. Today’s feature was tough. I hit some pot holes regarding two publishers. One was a jumble: Disney and its many affiliates. Two lack logos. Luckily, some founders reached out to me after I contacted them to fill in the blanks.

This daily countdown has been created because of the current comic book companies found in the monthly PREVIEWS catalog, exclusive to Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc.

Official Name: Darby Pop Publishing

Place of Origin: Los Angeles, CA

Distinction: An outlet for high-concept, high-quality visual storytelling. Jeff Kline recruited talent from a small circle of friends — writers and artists with whom he’d worked in both live-action and animation — by asking: “Have you ever had an idea you were convinced would make a killer comic book?”[1]

Darby Pop began as IDW’s first creator-owned imprint. Five original series and 40+ issues/TPs have been published to date. Kline has been quoted as saying: “It seems like a lot of people currently working in the comic book industry are hoping to use the experience as a stepping stone to movies or television. At Darby Pop Publishing, most of our talent is already well-established in those fields; they desperately WANT to be making comics!”[2]

Official Name: Dark Horse Comics

Place of Origin: Milwaukie, OR

Distinction: Dark Horse Comics was founded in 1986 by Mike Richardson as an offshoot of his Oregon comic-book retail chain, Things From Another World. Richardson pursued the idea of establishing an ideal atmosphere for creative professionals, and twenty-five years later the company has grown to become the third-largest comics publisher in the United States[3].

From the very start Dark Horse Comics was a different kind of publishing house. Writers and artists were treated as partners, an unheard-of generosity in the comic-publishing field at that time. Soon the industry’s top creators were flocking to Dark Horse, where they became involved in the publishing and marketing of their creations[4].

Dark Horse Comics launched with two initial titles in 1986, Dark Horse Presents and Boris the Bear. Paul Chadwick’s Concrete, about a congressional speechwriter who transforms into a two-thousand-pound cement creature, was a runaway hit and has received twenty-six industry awards and nominations to date. Within one year of its first publication, Dark Horse Comics added nine new titles to its roster, including The American, The Mark, Trekker, and Black Cross[5].

Multi-Media: In Hollywood, our JON SABLE FREELANCE title became the first independent comic to become a live action television series (“SABLE”, Rene Russo’s first professional acting gig). Among the talent for whom 1FIRST COMICS served as a major professional stepping stone were Mike Mignola (the Moorcock series); Howard Chaykin (his first creator owned series), and Bill Willingham (his first professional work, on the WARP! back-up stories)[15].

It is true that many of our titles are “filmic”, and that several are in development for film or television. That, however, is not the defining touchstone or whether or not we take on a title. That decision rests on but one analysis: can this proposal turn into a great book or series? On that score, 1FIRST COMICS’ success rate is unparalleled[16].

Distinction: One day, Diablo got the bright idea of following his childhood dream and started selling comic books at a little table at Comic Con in San Diego. His first book took off and became the popular horror graphic novel “The Unwanted” which begat the sci-fy epic “Hum”, and the wickedly terrifying “Nancy Hernandez and the Black Widows”, among many other terrific titles[17].

Diablo Comics mission is to entertain in an original “Diablo way”, by providing the public with much needed cool t shirts, comic books and hilarious mashup prints at great low prices![18]

Our first 10 stories start in the universe established by the 1968 cult classic Night of the Living Dead, then we let our imaginations… and our zombies… run wild. Mostly, our creators are telling new stories featuring new characters, but if you love the classic film, you won’t be disappointed; you can follow your favorite characters from the film, from their first appearances through their dying breaths, to their first baby zombie steps[30].

Dover Publications primarily publishes reissues, books no longer published by their original publishers. These are often, but not always, books in the public domain. The original published editions may be scarce or historically significant. Dover republishes these books, making them available at a significantly reduced cost[32].

Dover is well known for its reprints of classic works of literature, classical sheet music and of public-domain images from the 18th and 19th centuries. Dover also publishes an extensive collection of mathematical, scientific and engineering texts. It often targets its reprints at a niche market such as wood working[33].

Most Dover reprints are facsimiles by photo process of the originals, retaining the original pagination and typeset, sometimes with a new introduction. Dover will usually add new and more colorful cover art to its paper-bound editions. They retitle some books to make them more in line with modern usage and categorization. For example, the book Woodward’s National Architect was retitled A Victorian Housebuilder’s Guide.[34]

The name of the company is a pun on “drawing”, “quarterly”, and the practice of hanging, drawing and quartering. Initially it specialized in underground and alternative comics, but has since expanded into classic reprints and translations of foreign works[37].
