With the arrival of the first official trailer for Captain America: Civil War, Christmas has come early for fans of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. The action picks up where the teaser at the end of Ant Man left off with a reformed Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) in the custody of Captain America (Chris Evans) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). Bucky’s memory has returned and with it his bond with Cap. This puts the First Avenger at odds with his government and Avengers teammate, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) who want Bucky dead. Despite Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) warnings, Cap decides to go through with his plan to protect Bucky from the government.
William Hurt reprises his role as General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross to lay down the new rules of the game for the good captain. His image has shifted from hero to vigilante and the latitude he once enjoyed has now been taken away. Cap’s unwillingness to follow orders, something that has been brewing since the events of the Winter Soldier and the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D., divides the Avengers into two camps: Team Cap featuring Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon, Bucky, and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) up against Iron Man and War Machine (Don Cheadle).
The trailer, although a bit somber in tone does deliver some gems. We get to see our first glimpse of the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in action, some the action in Wakanda, Tony Stark with a black eye (I wonder who gave him that), War Machine broken and beaten and some kick ass action between Cap, Bucky and Tony. No sign of Spider-Man in the trailer though (sniff), so there’s more to look forward to as 2016 rolls approaches.
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6th, 2016.
