Tom Clancy is the game that keeps on giving, and in its tenth instalment it’s giving us Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. In a modern day setting, we are given what appears to be a rather large open world tactical shooter. wherein which moving as a unit is the only way through which you can survive. This has been, and will continue to be, a huge point in favour of the Tom Clancy game design. To often do gamers rush ahead for the glory of the kill in first person shooters, with this game such behaviour is often reprimanded, severely.
We roll together, or not at all.
This time around the game is set in Bolivia, which just so happens to be the largest supplier of drugs to the known world. The flow of drugs are controlled by the Santa Blanca drug cartel, an organization whose rule is so strong it has managed to destabilize the region through sheer fear. Witnessing their rise to power with a wary eye, the United States has deemed them a world threat as they begin to affect the outside world. With that in mind they send out their elite unit, the “Ghosts”, to destabilize and destroy the cartels influence.
The game will feature not only a new open world, the first in the series, but also various types of terrain to be traversed. This ranges from mountains to deserts, and looks completely different depending on the time of day due to the day-night cycle that exists within the game. This is an important factor within the game to take note of, for while daytime offers more visibility in regards to the location of your foes, it also them the same advantage. With night time operations available to us, we can perform our missions with better cover and a unique tactical advantage. When you combine this with the variety of ways you can approach a task, whether through an air drop or a night raid on buggies, you can see how coordinating with your friends is an important factor in your success.
On top of the already impressive tactical choices players are allowed to make, we can now interact with the people within the world around us. That means we can build hostile or friendly relationships with the NPC’s, such as citizens, officials, and even rebel factions. These interactions must be thought out though, for your actions will have consequences and will determine whether they will help or hinder your fight.
With so many FPS games out their in the world, this is seems just like another drop in the bucket. However, It almost seems like a brand new game for the Tom Clancy world, and I can’t wait to see if it’s as fun as the game trailer suggests.
